Services
Services provided by the Alaska Occupational Safety and Health Section (AKOSH) are focused on reducing occupational fatalities, injuries and illnesses. Reducing workplace accidents can have a significant impact on the high cost of doing business in the state.
Whether you’re here to file a safety complaint or request a free consultation, AKOSH is committed to helping Alaska’s workplaces stay safe, healthy, and productive.
Consultation and Training - (800) 656-4972
The Consultation and Training Section at AKOSH provides free, confidential assistance to help employers recognize and evaluate workplace hazards. Consultants do not issue citations or penalties and can conduct on-site visits and training tailored to each company’s specific needs. Employers can request services through a simple online form or by calling. More detailed information about available services, along with request forms, sample programs, and other helpful resources, can be found on the Consultation & Training page. This page also highlights AKOSH’s recognition and partnership programs-including VPP, SHARP, CHASE, and the upcoming Alaska Seafood Safety and Health Recognition Program-which support employers committed to maintaining exemplary safety and health standards.
Enforcement - (800) 770-4940
The Enforcement Section at AKOSH helps protect workers by conducting inspections in response to workplace accidents, employee complaints, and targeted safety programs. When violations of safety or health standards are found, monetary citations may be issued, and employers have the right to formally contest citations through the OSH Review Board. Enforcement also certifies specialized training for asbestos abatement workers, explosive handlers, and professional painters working with hazardous materials. Workers are protected from retaliation when reporting safety concerns, and AKOSH investigates whistleblower complaints to safeguard those rights. Employees or their representatives may file health and safety complaints at any time.
More detailed information-including jurisdictional guidance, standards and regulations, asbestos requirements, hazardous paint rules, recordkeeping resources, and other enforcement-related links-can be found on the Enforcement page.
Occupational accidents that result in death, inpatient hospitalization, amputation, or loss of eye involving one or more employees must be reported to AKOSH within 8 hours. Immediately report accidents to:
- (800) 770-4940 or (907) 269-4940 ( 8 am to 4:30 pm with lunch at 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm, M - F, AK Time)
- (800) 321-6742 (After 4:30 p.m. or on weekends and holiday)
Fatalities in Alaska
The Fatalgram Log provides public notices of workplace fatalities occurring under AKOSH jurisdiction. These notices are designed to assist employees and businesses with similar working conditions in an effort to learn from the accident and reduce injuries and fatalities in the workplace.
