Mechanical Inspection Section -
Elevators, Escalators, Wheel-Chair Lifts, and Dumbwaiters
The section administers the state’s elevator program. All elevators, escalators, wheel-chair lifts, and dumbwaiters in the state are subject to initial and periodic inspection. In the Municipality of Anchorage, the inspection of elevators is conducted by the Building Safety Department though agreement with Mechanical Inspection.
Before the installation of new equipment, the contractor must submit a working layout of the equipment or apparatus to Mechanical Inspection for review. The owner or contractor must arrange for an initial inspection prior to placing the device into service. When an inspection is completed, the owner, contractor, or maintenance provider is notified of the results, including any deficiencies noted at the time of inspection. All fees required for the inspection will be collected before a Certificate of Operation will be issued for the equipment.
Note: Please see elevator statutes and regulations for specific requirements for reporting elevator accidents or injuries.
To speak with an Elevator Inspector or request an inspection, please call the Mechanical Inspection office at (907) 269-4925 or by email at mi@alaska.gov.
