Labor Solicits Proposals For Youth Programs

One Million Dollars Available through Balance of State Workforce Area

Approximately $1 million is available to agencies and businesses to provide jobs for Alaska's youth, targeting young people residing in areas impacted by the recent Western Alaska fisheries disaster, the Department of Labor and Workforce Development announced today. 

The $1 million is available throughout the Balance of State Workforce Investment Area and it is anticipated that these funds will be distributed as follows: 

  • Southeast $200,000
  • North Slope and Interior Alaska $300,000
  • Northwest $200,000
  • Southwest* $200,000
    *this includes Bristol Bay area
  • Rural Southcentral/Kenai Peninsula $100,000

Funds included in this proposal are for services to economically disadvantaged youth age 14-21 who are having trouble completing high school or getting a job. The objectives for the funded programs will be to improve educational achievement, prepare youth for successful employment; help youth become leaders and citizens, and provide support services. 

The Request For Proposals includes extra points for proposals that serve youth in the fisheries disaster region, which includes the communities of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, the Yukon River and its tributaries, and Norton Sound.

The deadline for proposals to be received at the issuing office is 4:30 PM, June 8, 2001. Four copies must be received by that time, not faxed or postmarked. Late proposals will not be considered.

Those interested in applying should contact one of the above offices to submit a proposal. It is expected that awards will be announced by June 15, with project starting dates anticipated for July 1.
